Despite the economic crisis and the ups-and-downs of recent years in city politics and town planning, the Marbella real estate market is managing to raise its head. Although the figures are not quite the same as they were six years ago, 2010 looks set to end with more homes being sold than in 2009, making Marbella, in addition, the only municipality on the Costa del Sol where sales have actually increased. So says the December 2010 report Coyuntura del Sector Inmobiliario (Situation of the Real Estate Sector) drafted by the Andalusian Association of Residential, Sports and Health Tourism Businesses (Promotur). While the fourth quarter results are not in yet, the first three quarters of the year evidenced greater sales of non-subsidized housing than in the same period a year earlier. In 2009, there were 1,371 sales in the first eight months of the year, compared with 1,730 over the same period in 2010. The greatest increase was recorded in the second quarter of 2010, with 711 sales as opposed to 438 in the second quarter of 2009.

Michelle and Sasha Obama arrive in Marbella this week for their summer vacation. An odd choice for the first lady… Maybe not! For most who live and work in Marbella we are fully aware of the shady side of Marbella – but show me an area of the world which doesn’t have a less sparkling side… St.Tropez, Miami, Paris, London, New York – all great places when you only see the glamourous side, but scratch a little deeper and there are problems. Marbella, and the southern coast in general, is a very beautiful place which most tourist never et to see, and until the press stop concentrating on the bad parts and Marbella’s recent chequered history it will never be able to lose its present image.
