Malaga is the capital city of the Costa del Sol and is based in the centre of the Costa del Sol (CDS), with the CDS east on one side (heading to Nerja) and the CDS west on the other (stretching as far as Gibraltar). Malaga also serves as a major port and an industrial centre for Southern Spain. Access is made easy by the excellent road network and the coastal rail service running from Malaga City to Fuengirola. In 2012, Malaga had a recorded population of just fewer than 570,000 and is the sixth largest City in Spain. Popular areas in which to purcase a second home or residence, such as Marbella, Puerto Banus and Estepona, are all based within the Malaga region.
Malaga as a city has so much to offer, mainly as a result of its 3,000+ years of history. Excavations have discovered evidence of the Romans and the Moors and as a result there is a large selection of historical monuments in the city. The best way to travel around the city to view its interesting history is by open top bus, where you can get a great tour in practically any language you require! Another great way to see the Old Town of Malaga City is by taking a 'Tapas tour', which is literally a tour on foot around various popular Tapas Bars, whilst taking in some history along the way - Highly recommended!
Malaga is also well worth a visit during one of its many festivals. The Fiestas here are numerous and each one is celebrated with the excitement that is synonymous with Andalucia. The main Fiesta is the annual Feria, which takes place in the middle of August, however Malaga City has some of the most beautiful Christmas lights which are normally switched on in early December, and this is a stunning time to visit the City. Taking a 'Tapas Tour' during December is a wonderful time of year to take in the feel of this magical and unique beach front City!
Malaga City is also the home of the coasts' International airport (8km west of the City) - one of the largest in Spain and in a typical year can welcome up to 20 million visitors.
A new terminal opened at Malaga Airport during March 2010, along with a new runway in 2011. This has dramatically increased the number of visitors to the local area and the CDS in general, opening up the entire southern coast up to worldwide travellers and can now offer direct flights to the US, Middle East and Asia.
